A vacation in southern Italy? Let’s discover the best areas to stay in Sorrento for a pleasant stay!
Sorrento – Surriento in Neapolitan, Sorrento in Italian – is a small Italian municipality in the province of Naples in Campania, with a population of 16,589, facing north towards the Gulf of Naples. Sorrento is just a few kilometers from the famous ancient archaeological sites of Pompeii andHerculaneum, Naples and Mount Vesuvius. Sorrento is also world-famous for the production of limoncello, a lemon liqueur. Finding accommodation in Sorrento won’t be difficult. However, it’s a good idea to book in advance, especially during the summer months when the accommodation on offer is snapped up by tourists on package tours.
Sorrento’s rich historical heritage, exceptional microclimate and abundant olive, orange and lemon groves make it an ideal base for visiting Naples, Pompeii, Vesuvius and the Amalfi Coast. Here’s where to stay in Sorrento.
Historical center
Perched on a cliff overlooking the sea, Sorrento’s historic center is home to a maze of narrow streets and centuries-old historic buildings, including Baroque and Renaissance architecture. The central square, Piazza Tasso, is a lively meeting place. To do in the town center: several museums – Bottega de la Tarsia Lignea, Correale Museum – Sorrento Cathedral, Casa di Cornelia Tasso, Palazzo Veniero , numerous churches and the Villa Communale di Sorrento, where you can enjoy a splendid view of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius.
Drive along the cliffs from the picturesque port of Marina Grande to the « L’agruminato » park, passing through Piazza della Vittoria (Victory Square): along the way, numerous bars and restaurants await their shoppers. In the evening, the orientation offers magnificent sunsets. Staying in Sorrento, especially near the port, also allows you to discover the island of Capri, to the west. For accommodation in Sorrento center, however, hotels and even youth hostels are expensive.
Sant’Agnello
Sant’Agnello, another town with a breathtaking view of the Neapolitan coast, is a neighboring commune of Sorrento: just ten minutes from Corso Italia, Sorrento’s main street, you’ll find numerous bars, restaurants, fruit and vegetable markets and hotels to stay in. Be warned, though, that accommodation is often luxurious and therefore expensive, so staying in Sant’Agnello is not for everyone. But everyone can go for a swim at Marinella beach , or admire the flamboyant colors of the sun’s rays shining on the rocks at dusk.
Marina di Puolo
Where to stay near Sorrento for a dip in clear, turquoise waters? In Marina di Puolo, a small town to the west of Sorrento at the end of the peninsula, you’ll find a small village between the sea and the mountains, with Puolo beach and a few restaurants – make sure you book in advance, as crowds are likely to be high in summer – along Via Marina di Puolo.
