A small seaside resort 110 kilometers from Barcelona and 10 kilometers south of Tarragona in Catalonia, Salou is the tourist capital of the Costa Daurada. Close to Cambrils and Vilaseca, Salou is popular for its ideal Mediterranean climate and was once renowned for its permanent fair and Ferris wheel. Salou is also famous for its nearby theme park, PortAventura. Home to around 27,000 people, the population swells as summer approaches. A port town in ancient times under the Iberians, Greeks and Romans, Salou was the starting point for the conquest of the Balearic Islands in 1229, during the Renconquista, which marked the creation of the powerful Kingdom of Mallorca. There are many historical monuments to visit in Salou, but the main reason for staying here is the beaches and nightlife: bars and discos abound on the seafront. It’s also a leading sports town.

Downtown

Would you like to stay in Salou, visit its sights, be by the sea and be able to do everything without taking the car? There are plenty of hotels in the town center where you can sleep and bars where you can party.

In the center, visit the Torre Vella de Salou – literally the « old tower of Salou » – a fortified tower dating from the a 16th-century fortified tower. Today, it is an art gallery housing paintings and antique objects. The Mercat Municipal market, with its popular atmosphere, will delight your taste buds. Stroll along the seafront to the Barquilla Pesquera Decorativa park, with its fountains and palm-lined avenue reminiscent of Barcelona‘s Rambla. Salou’s long beach, with its colorful lettering – reminiscent of the Plaza de España in Santa Cruz de Tenerife – is just a stone’s throw from your hotel: plage du levant, plage du ponant. Stroll along the Camino de la Ronda and you’ll find the Pilons beach.

PortAventura

The largest amusement park in southern Europe, PortAventura is located near Salou. The park is divided into several sections, each with a different theme, where you can ride some of the world’s craziest and fastest roller coasters, as well as numerous rides for children. Close to the main park is the Costa Caribe Aquatic Park, a huge water park with slides, pools, fountains, beaches and all kinds of water attractions.

PortAventura also has several hotels (Hotel Mansión de Lucy, Hotel Gold River, Hotel PortAventura, Hotel Caribe, Hotel El Paso) – an ideal way to combine the thrills of the theme park with a fabulous seaside vacation. These hotels allow you to sleep as close to the PortAventura park as possible, so you can make the most of the attractions from early morning to late evening.

Capellans

The main attraction of the area are the beaches and amusement parks if you have children. Capellans Beach, Platja dels Llenguadets and Llarga Beach offer beautiful stretches of sand to bask in. The further east you go, the more pine forests replace concrete, giving the area a wilder feel. The streets of Capellans are strewn with hotels and accommodation: a good choice if the center of Salou is too crowded.

Cap de Salou

Here’s one of Salou’s must-sees: Cap de Salou, to the east of Capellans, with its beaches and rocky coves lined with pine trees. Less crowded, they are reminiscent of the Breton coast – yes, they are! -but with swimming, snorkeling and sunbathing on the agenda. At the end, a short walk takes you up to the Salou lighthouse, offering a beautiful view of the sea and the Catalan coast. Looking for somewhere to stay in Cap de Salou? Platja de la Pineda

Finally, the last area to sleep in Salou: Platja de la Pineda, to the east. The beach is so wide that you’d almost think you were in the Landes. Numerous shops and terraces dot the west side of Passeig de Pau Casals, on the edge of the sea. A large wild park with pine trees on the edge of the beach will make you feel like you’re in the countryside (as long as you ignore the cruise ships anchored in the port of Tarragona).
