When looking for accommodation in Rovaniemi, it’s a good idea to take a look at the city center. Let’s be honest, it’s not the prettiest town in Finland, but the city center has a lot going for it. It’s easy to get to, with the airport only a few minutes away by car, and there’s plenty to do! If you want to discover them, we recommend renting an apartment to feel right at home. As well as cafés and cosy restaurants where you can enjoy a reindeer steak with lingonberries, there are museums not to be missed. It has to be said that the Finns love to get their culture on in the warmth of short winter afternoons! Visit the Arktikum, dedicated to the Arctic way of life. Then discover the splendid Taidemuseo museum, dedicated to art, or the Science Centre Pilke, dedicated to Nordic forests.

If you’re lucky enough to have found a place to stay in Rovaniemi near the Kemijoki, take a stroll along its banks. At 550 km, it’s Finland’s longest river! It freezes in winter and offers a breathtaking spectacle, especially if you take a stroll along Lumberjack’s Candle Bridge. This bridge is undoubtedly the city’s most famous, and makes for a lovely stroll.

Are you with your family, and are your children a little bored? Further south, the Angry Birds Activity Park is a free playground inspired by the famous disgruntled bird! As you can see, there’s plenty to do in the heart of the city. But you’ll see that Rovaniemi has plenty of other surprises in store!

Santa’s village is an institution to be reckoned with when looking for accommodation in Rovaniemi. It is, after all, the official home of the generous bearded man dressed all in red! It’s located eight kilometers northeast of the city center, and less than two kilometers from the airport. Of course, the village is at its best in winter, when it’s covered in snow and sparkling with magic. As soon as you arrive, we recommend a visit to Santa’s post office. It’s here that letters written by children eager to receive presents are delivered. Of course, gifts can also be purchased in the adjoining stores, to the delight of young and old alike.

Very popular with tourists who flock here for the festive season, everything is designed to please. You can eat delicious local dishes, enjoy the forest and fresh air, go for a walk… The icing on the cake is that you can even get close to reindeer (when they’re not pulling Santa’s sleigh). Numerous hotels are located in and around the area, allowing you to stay right in Santa’s village. We recommend you try sleeping in igloos: an original idea that will help make your stay unique.

Other accommodation options include a cozy chalet or a state-of-the-art hotel. In most cases, you’ll be able to enjoy the pleasures of a sauna. In reindeer country, there’s one for every two inhabitants!

Lake Lehtojärvi is located some 30 km from the town of Rovaniemi. The reason we mention it is that this beautiful, unspoilt natural area is well known to the locals. They come here to enjoy themselves, summer and winter alike, and it’s easy to see why! Many activities can be organized here, from snowmobiling to dog sledding. If you prefer a more leisurely approach, cross-country skiing or snowshoeing will delight you.

In summer, you can also swim here or enjoy a hike on the many marked trails surrounding the area. A forest of majestic conifers awaits you.

To make matters worse, it’s easy to find a place to stay in Rovaniemi around Lake Lehtojärvi. Hotels and guesthouses are located nearby, and there’s something to suit every budget. Our favorite is theArctic Snow Hotel, with its luxurious rooms made of snow and ice. In addition to its delicious restaurant, it features an outdoor sauna: perfect for diving into the snow like the Finns! What’s more, fishing and ice-sculpting competitions are regularly organized by the managers during the winter season. What are you waiting for?
