Where to stay in Hamburg

Où dormir à Hambourg ?

For your stay in Germany, finding accommodation won’t be difficult. Here’s where to stay in Hamburg!

Germany’s second-largest city after Berlin, and the country’s largest port, Hamburg is located in northern Germany, near the mouth of the Elbe River. The metropolis has 1.78 million inhabitants – 3.5 million in the urban area – spread over 755 km². An economic, industrial, commercial, cultural, artistic and tourist city, Hamburg attracts many visitors for its festive atmosphere, culture, rich history and economic prosperity – which also attracts expatriates, investors and multinational companies from all over the world.

The Hanseatic city’s accommodation offer is abundant, and you’ll have no trouble renting an apartment or booking an overnight stay in the district of your choice. The city is subdivided into seven districts – Mitte, Altona, Eimsbüttel, Nord, Wandsbek, Bergedorf and Harburg – into which numerous neighborhoods with very different atmospheres are interwoven: the city center, Schanzenviertel, Neustadt, Winterhude, Speicherstadt, Saint Pauli, Eimsbüttel, Neustadt, Schanzenviertel, Rotherbaum, Eppendor, Hoheluft.

Altstadt is Hamburg’s oldest district, located on the shores of Lake Alster. Here you’ll find absolutely everything you need: historic monuments such as medieval churches and half-timbered houses, bars – where you can enjoy a good pint – and fish and seafood restaurants, great shopping, especially along the Mönckebergstraße and Spitalerstraße shopping streets. Don’t miss the churches of St. Petri and St. Jacobi. Admire the view of the city center from the lake, with its majestic bell towers and zinc roofs reminding us that we’re in a Nordic city. Further south, don’t miss the warehouse district known as Speicherstadt. A good place to stay, very central. On the other hand, hotels are expensive and few and far between.

This is Hamburg’s party district, the rue de la soif (rue Saint-Michel) of the North German version of Rennes. In the old days, it was a red-light district, where the working classes came to indulge in drugs, prostitution, violence and debauchery. St Pauli is known as the red light district, but today it’s a trendy area where young bobos and hipsters flock to the emblematic Reeperbahn street. It’s also a « rock n’ roll » area, with numerous bars offering concerts of pop, rock, metal and more. There are few hotels, so staying with a local is the best option.

Located to the north of the city center, this is the city’s busiest district. It’s home to many parks, and rents are much lower than in the Mitte district. If you choose this area to stay in Hamburg, you’ll be a little out of the way, but that’s the price you pay for lower rents. Different atmospheres coexist here: both a middle-class family atmosphere seeking peace and quiet away from the hustle and bustle of the city center, and at the same time plenty of lively, friendly places near Lake Alster, with bars, cafés and restaurants. As we’ve said, finding accommodation in Hamburg isn’t difficult, and these areas are very busy. On this western side of Lake Alster, you’ll find hotels, backpacker host els and homestay apartments… Not too far from the city center, in a lively, festive district just a stone’s throw from everything!
