Where to stay in Dhaka

Off to Bangladesh, the land of the Ganges Delta? Here’s where to stay in Dhaka, one of Asia’s largest metropolises!

Founded in the 10th century, Dhaka didn’t really come into its own until the 17th century, when it became the Mughal capital of the Nâwabs of Bengal province. It came under British administration in 1765, and went through a turbulent history until the secession of this eastern part of Pakistan, which became a new state, Bangladesh, of which it is still the capital today. A gigantic city, poor and overcrowded (Dhaka is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, with over 15 million inhabitants), it is a major industrial center on the Indian subcontinent, but despite appearances, has many assets that will appeal to thrill-seekers.

The kindness of its people is legendary, and the energy released by the crowds during the day is absolutely unique. A visit to Dhaka is an opportunity to dazzle all five senses and create unforgettable memories!

So, are you ready to take the plunge and immerse yourself in the charms of this typically Oriental megalopolis? No problem: here are our tips for finding the ideal accommodation in Dhaka.

« Old Dhaka » is the historic heart of the city. Aligning its narrow streets with period colonial buildings, you’ll find all the places of worship that mark Bangladesh’s history: churches, Hindu and Buddhist temples and mosques. This picturesque district also offers a breathtaking spectacle: on the equinox of each spring, Holi is celebrated, the festival of colors so dear to Hinduism, when the inhabitants cover themselves in colored pigments. On the other hand, accommodation in Dhaka’s old town can be literally unaffordable, as the country is not yet a major tourist destination, and supply is scarce and therefore expensive… especially if you’re looking for a « European » standard of accommodation!

This upscale district of Dhaka is overflowing with life: street vendors, music, horns and laughter punctuate the lives of the locals. Hotels can be found here for a very high price, but many accommodations are beginning to be offered via rental platforms; moreover, the presence of Western establishments is favored by the presence of diplomatic institutions, of which there are many in the area. Take a trip to the UAE Moitry Shopping Complex, a shopping mall offering a wide range of local products, or take a stroll through the typical Bangladeshi stalls!
