The second-largest town in the Dordogne department after Périgueux, Bergerac is the department’s sub-prefecture and a listed city of art and history. With a population of 27,269, Bergerac lies on the road to Agen, in the north of the Périgord pourpre, a small region named after the color of the grape leaves in autumn, and around 100 km from Bordeaux. Bergerac boasts 13 Appellations d’Origine Contrôlée and 12,600 hectares of vineyards, with over 1,200 winemakers producing a total of 560,000 hectolitres a year. Archaeological digs have uncovered the remains of a Neolithic village dating from 3500 to 3000 BC, testifying to the region’s long history of human occupation.

The old town
Bergerac’s old town center revolves around Place Pélissière, and includes most of the town’s historic monuments:Eglise Notre-Dame, Chapelle Sainte-Jeanne-d’Arc, Eglise Saint-Jean des Cordeliers, if you like religious buildings. Museums include the Musée d’Anthropologie du Tabac, the Musée du Vin et de la Batellerie and the Costi Museum (dedicated to the sculptor Constantin Papachristopoulos (1906-2004)). Place de la Myrpe, the statue of Cyrano, before visiting the Cloître des Récollets. The Quais Salvette, just next door, is a great place to stroll along the old port and the banks of the Dordogne.
From the river to the train station, Bergerac’s town center offers a host of medieval half-timbered houses to take a look at, before heading to the many bars and restaurants where you can enjoy the fine weather and appreciate the charms of the local terroir: gastronomy and wine to match!

Les Rives de la Dordogne
Just outside the old town, the quays of the Dordogne River offer an urban stroll at the foot of medieval buildings. Cross the Vieux Pont, past the port – once an important harbour – and enjoy a fine view of the old town from the other bank. A vast, shaded green space beside the river, to the right of the Vieux Pont, offers a natural setting: the Quai de la Pelouse will appeal to walkers, couples and families looking for a peaceful spot to picnic.
