Ready to soak up some Spanish culture? Let’s discover the best venues for flamenco shows in Barcelona.
If there’s one art form essential to Spanish culture and identity, it’s flamenco! Born in Andalusia in the 18th century, it combines music and solo dance. The result? A spellbinding spectacle made even more magical by the dancers’ costumes!
Over the centuries, flamenco and its artists have been exported all over the country. Of course, the Catalan capital, known for its rich nightlife, is no exception. So, where can you enjoy a quality flamenco experience in Barcelona? Tablaos, worthy heirs to the Spanish « singing cafés », are undoubtedly the best place to see a flamenco show.
We love their intimate atmosphere! Let’s be honest, we’re also crazy about their mouth-watering tapas menus. But these little taverns aren’t the only option for enjoying flamenco in the city. The center of Barcelona is also home to a number of majestic theaters to discover. Let’s take a look!
Los Tarantos, Barcelona’s temple to flamenco
- 💙 We love: spending the evening in a place steeped in history
Let’s start our flamenco tour with a visit to Barcelona’s Plaça reial, on the edge of the Gotic district. This emblematic square is home to a cult establishment: Los Tarantos. Opened in 1963, it is the city’s oldest flamenco tablao.
Over the decades, it has played host to some of the country’s greatest flamenco artists. Even today, the venue offers authentic performances every day, featuring both stars and up-and-coming talents. These improvisational flamenco shows are always a thrill to behold.
In terms of decor, the atmosphere is more that of a pop club with 70s accents. Nothing to do with the posh atmosphere of one of its great competitors, the Palacio del Flamenco, currently closed. Yet Los Tarantos is just as mythical. In fact, its reputation attracts dense crowds every evening. A word of advice: get there early to grab the best seats!
City Hall, a flamenco theater on Barcelona’s Rambla
- 💙 We like: the fact that the venue also offers flamenco classes for amateur dancers
Let’s continue our stroll to another of Barcelona’s most famous squares: the Plaça de Catalunya. This famous Rambla is home to the City Hall Theatre. Built in the 19th century, it offers an elegant and comfortable setting for a flamenco show.
It’s on this choice stage that we invite you to discover a twirling show entitled Flamenco Barcelona. A far cry from the traditional solos seen in the corners of cafés, this show features a host of dancers. Among them are some of the most renowned contemporary flamenco artists. Music, dance, costumes, performances: at City Hall, you’re in for a treat!
Le Tablao de Carmen, combining dinner and a flamenco show
- 💙 We love: combining a flamenco evening with a visit to the Poble Espanyol open-air museum
Looking for an amazing experience based on Spanish traditions and folklore? We’ve got the magic formula: an evening at the Tablao de Carmen! This tavern is located in the heart of the Poble Espanyol: an open-air museum that recreates a Spanish village from another era. We recommend that you combine your flamenco evening with a visit to the village’s craftsmen’s workshops and other buildings. The experience is sure to appeal to young and old alike!
At Tablao de Carmen, you can enjoy a fine flamenco show in the purest Andalusian tradition. The name of the venue pays homage to the iconic dancer Carmen Amaya. But that’s not all! This tablao also offers a dinner-and-show formula, as well as tapas. Be sure to try the patatas bravas, delicious fried potatoes in sauce.
Palau Dalmases, a 17th-century palace for flamenco shows
- 💙 We love: the pretty courtyard
Not far from the Palau de la Música is the Palau Dalmases, another smaller palace, but almost as pretty! Built in the 17th century, it boasts a beautiful medieval-inspired courtyard. We trust you’ll be able to take impeccable souvenir photos of your flamenco evening!
Because beyond the architecture, it’s the flamenco shows that caught our eye at the Palau Dalmases. With two dancers, a singer and a guitarist on stage, they perfectly capture the purest essence of this ancestral art. For one hour each day, guest flamenco artists bring a sparkle to the audience’s eyes.
In the tradition of tablaos, the venue offers tapas before or after the show. Another tempting option is to venture out into the neighborhood, which is called El Born. It’s home to a host of great little restaurants, as well as design and craft stores. You’ll also enjoy its unique atmosphere!
Tablao Flamenco Cordobes, a flamenco bar-restaurant in Barcelona
- 💙 We love: the spectacular Moorish-inspired decor
Back to La Rambla, halfway between the Liceu metro station and the sea, to discover one of our favorite tablaos in Barcelona. Here, the big show begins as soon as you enter, with an impressive Moorish decor. We love this nod to the arabesques of the finest monuments in Andalusia, the birthplace of flamenco. Founded in 1970, Tablao Flamenco Cordobes is one of Barcelona’s must-see tablaos.
Like many of its competitors, it offers the possibility ofcombining dinner with a flamencoshow. A recipe for a memorable evening, especially when the setting is a journey in itself! On the plate, paella, tapas and gazpachos vie for the limelight in a rich buffet menu. But none of the culinary specialties can overshadow the real stars of the evening: the musicians and dancers.
There’s no doubt about the quality of the programming. It has to be said that the founders of the venue were artists themselves, which enabled them to attract the great names of flamenco as early as the 70s. Today, their heirs honorably perpetuate the tradition!
The Palau de la Música Catalana, Barcelona’s finest flamenco venue
- 💙 We love: the incredible decor of the showroom
Flamenco is a must-see cultural experience in Barcelona, but so is the architecture! How about combining the two in one magical evening? We’ve got just the thing: the Gran Gala Flamenco at the Palau de la Música!
Gran Gala is undoubtedly Barcelona’s most famous flamenco show. For the past 18 years, it has paid tribute to the great names of flamenco and its essence in a dazzling staging. Here, we’re leaning more towards the grand spectacle than the intimate atmosphere of the tablaos! From choreography to costumes, the experience is truly stunning.
And if that’s not enough, no problem: the majestic setting of the Palau de la Música will dazzle you. Designed by the famous Catalan architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner, it is a Unesco World Heritage Site. And so is flamenco! Its art nouveau style and rich decor areone of Barcelona’s jewels. We therefore recommend that you take the time to visit it before or after your show.
Ready for a timeless evening in Barcelona? Vibrate to the rhythm of flamenco in one of the legendary venues in this selection. The atmospheres they offer are varied but, I promise, the magic is always there. So, which one catches your eye? Tell us all about it in the comments!
