Ranking of the world’s most dangerous cities

Drug trafficking, gang wars, political instability, corruption and poverty. These are just some of the reasons why some of the world’s cities are becoming powder kegs!

Unsurprisingly, Latin America is the world’s deadliest region. Yet it accounts for only 9% of the world’s population. Sadly, it is the scene of 28% of the world’s murders, according to the United Nations.

The world’s most dangerous city is San Pedro Sula in Honduras, with around 169 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants. This ranking is based on figures from 2012 and, for some cities where data is missing, 2011.

Of course, the study does not include deaths in war zones and ethnic conflicts.

In this « Top 50 » of the world’s most dangerous cities, 41 are in Latin America. A little more surprisingly, 5 American cities are also on the list. Indeed, the USA is a very contradictory nation in this respect, in terms of its standard of living. Asia is only slightly represented, because even with a very high homicide rate, population density is low. The most dangerous cities are to be found in Latin America!
