History of the Lego Museum in Prague

Muzeum Lega opened its doors in 2011, in the district of Nové Město. Although the name means « the New Town » in French, make no mistake: it’s been around since 1348! So you’re right on the streets of historic Prague. The museum is housed in an old building on Národní Avenue. On three floors, it displays its collections, a play area and a store.
All the museum’s pieces come from the private collection of Miloš Křeček. This Czech entrepreneur took advantage of his travels abroad to bring back numerous boxes. At present, the total value is estimated at some fifteen million euros! The museum boasts models from Denmark, Germany and Cuba. Some, like the Statue of Liberty, have never even been put on the European market. A visit to the Lego Museum is therefore a unique opportunity for enthusiasts to admire them in the flesh!
While other museums around the world are dedicated to the famous building set, this one specializes in its history. A visit will take you back to the creation of Lego boxes in Denmark in the 1930s. Indeed, a Danish carpenter, Ole Kirk Christiansen, is credited with inventing these little plastic bricks. Originally, he designed wooden toys. However, when his workshop burned down and the quality of the raw material was poor, he turned to a more cost-effective material. Lego’s capacity for innovation has enabled it to reinvent itself over the years, winning over generations of children. A case in point? Since 2018, the group has been developing products made from plant-based plastic, in order to limit its impact on the environment.
This is the adventure that Prague’s Muzeum Lega invites you to relive through the constructions on display in its showcases. One of the highlights is the presence of several collectors’ models, which will be particularly appreciated by enthusiasts. And, who knows, maybe you’ll recognize some of your childhood toys? What to see and do at the Lego Museum in Prague?

This Lego museum is home to around three thousand unique constructions, divided into some twenty different themes. From showcase to showcase, you’ll witness a pirate attack, a space mission or a knights’ tournament. Perhaps you prefer the franchises developed by the brand? The Star Wars collection is particularly impressive, occupying a room of its own. Harry Potter and Indiana Jones are also featured, to the delight of fans.
There are also reproductions of famous monuments, such as the Taj Mahal and the Eiffel Tower. The city’s iconic Charles Bridge and Prague Castle also have brick versions. Trains, old and new, and Lego Technic cars complete the collection. In all, no fewer than a million bricks are used in the museum! Some models alone are worth several thousand euros, and represent hundreds of hours of work.
While there’s plenty to look at, a visit to Prague’s Lego Museum is also an opportunity to try out some interactive activities. For example, you can operate certain sets, like merry-go-rounds. Buttons invite you to trigger scenes in the showcases. Above all, a room is reserved for making your own creations. Let your inner child do the talking!
Conquered? The museum has a well-stocked Lego store that will delight fans of both vintage boxes and more recent models. Some of which you won’t find anywhere else. And if you’re looking to add to your collection, Lego characters are sold individually, as are spare parts.
How do I get to the Lego Museum in Prague?
The Lego Museum is located in the heart of Prague, at 31, avenue Národní, in the Nové Město district. To get there, there are no fewer than three modes of transport available:
By car
If you decide to reach the Nové Město district by car, you’ll find parking close to the museum. But beware: these parking lots are not free. Count on fifty Czech crowns (two euros) for the one on Národní Avenue, and forty Czech crowns (one euro and fifty cents) for the one at the National Theatre.
By streetcar
Streetcars are a very practical form of public transport in Prague. To get to the Muzeum Lega, you can use lines 9, 18 or 22, all of which stop at the Národní třída station.
By metro
The Czech capital is served by three metro lines. Line B takes you closest to the museum, to the Národní třída station.

The Lego Museum Prague is open Monday to Sunday, 10 am to 8 pm. Opening times remain the same from January to December, except in exceptional cases. Changes are announced in advance on the museum’s official website.
RATES
As far as prices are concerned, the museum offers a wide range of tickets to suit all visitors.

- Children under 120 cm: 70 Kč (€2.70)
