When we think of paradise islands, Greece quickly springs to mind. Between the Cyclades, Crete and the Ionian Islands, the land of the Hellenes is home to many island wonders, each as magical as the next!

Among these wonders is Corfu. Located in the Ionian Islands, Corfu is the largest island in the archipelago and the starting point for many excursions.

The Blue Lagoon at Syvota, a wild island close to the town of the same name, is one of the most popular excursions for holidaymakers from the port of Corfu.

This article aims to give you all the information you need to visit the Blue Lagoon, as well as some ideas for original excursions.

When you ask anyone what the first image that comes to mind is when they think of Blue Lagoon, the answers are often the same.

The Blue Lagoon represents the beach paradise, crystal-clear turquoise water, the summer months, relaxation, swimming, sunbathing… In a word, the Blue Lagoon is one of the images of happiness for everyone!

The term Blue Lagoon refers to many places around the world, and even to a famous cocktail! These include the Icelandic spa and the island of Comino in Malta.

Yet the Greek Blue Lagoon has little to envy its acolytes! If it’s less well known, it’s partly due to its unique geographical location. The Greek Blue Lagoon is a cove lost in nature and in the middle of the sea. It’s located on a deserted island called Mourtos or Nisida Syvota, which means « islet of Syvota » in Greek.

Although often associated with Corfu – the starting point for excursions – and the Ionian Islands, the Blue Lagoon is administratively located in the region of Epirus and is attached to the town of Syvota.

If you’re looking to relax for a day, then a trip to the Blue Lagoon is for you. This cove is the very definition of fun.

At the Blue Lagoon, our day is spent lounging on the beach, relaxing and enjoying the magic of the place.

The Blue Lagoon is untouched by any temptation other than swimming. There are no straw huts or doughnut sellers here, just holidaymakers who, like you, want to discover one of Greece’s hidden treasures.

Situated at the bottom of a small cliff, the rest of Mourtos is inaccessible, and it’s not clear what lies beneath the shrubbery covering the entire islet…

A visit to the Blue Lagoon means enjoying a corner of the Caribbean in Europe. In addition to the sublime color of the water, its temperature is exceptional.

In September, it hovers around 25-26 degrees! From May to October, or even November, you can enjoy it without any problem.October is the best time to visit, as it’s much less crowded than July and August.

Why not try your hand at the Blue Lagoon on an excursion from Corfu?

After a few hours’ sailing, you’ll discover the magnificent Syvota cave by boat and then return to the sea to head for Parga.

A small town on the mainland, Parga is built amphitheatrically in a picturesque bay, where the Panagia islet facing it is protected from the sun by the fortress.

For 3 hours, you can visit the fortress with your guide, admiring the view from the top or wandering around at your leisure.

Whichever you choose, take time out for lunch in a traditional taverna to discover the succulent flavours of the region!

A swim for dessert? You’ll find it on this excursion!

How to get to the Blue Lagoon

By plane

To visit the Blue Lagoon, it’s best to be on the island of Corfu. There are direct flights to Corfu from Paris, Lyon, Marseille and Toulouse in summer.

In low season, a stopover, usually in Athens, is necessary. Airlines with direct flights to Corfu include Transavia and Aegean.

As the Blue Lagoon is located on the islet of Syvota, Preveza airport is closer than Corfu airport. From June 2021, Transavia will be operating direct flights from Paris-Orly during the high season.

However, arriving in Preveza is only advisable for those not wishing to stay in Corfu, the island from which all excursions depart.
