Armagnac in a nutshell

Defined as an Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée since 1936,Armagnac is France’s oldest eau-de-vie. It was first known in the Middle Ages for its therapeutic virtues. It was not until the 17th century that it really took off, becoming a genuine consumer product. Unlike Cognac, Armagnac does not take its name from a town. The term comes from « Armin », the name of a Frankish chieftain in the 6th century AD. It means « mighty warrior » in Old Germanic. To reward him for his bravery, a department was named Armagnac, before taking the name of its river: the Gers.

So it’s in the Gers, as well as in a few cantons in the Landes and Lot-et-Garonne, that all the Armagnac know-how is to be found. Armagnac is produced by distilling dry white wine in a traditional still. While distillation must take place within 3 months of the harvest, Armagnac is aged for many years in oak barrels. In contact with this wood, it develops its aromas and takes on its amber color.
