Visit Popeye’s village on the island of Malta

Village Popeye Malte

In Malta, a village used as a backdrop for the Popeye musical

Theme parks have been all the rage in recent years: whether it’s Parc Astérix, Disney or more themed parks like Puy-du-Fou or Futuroscope, there’s no shortage of choice.

But when you decide to go for a walk in Europe, and in particular on the island of Malta, can you imagine that there is such a great attraction? The answer is « yes », of course, with the Popeye Village theme park in Malta.

The origins of this village created from scratch

Located some 20 kilometers from the Maltese capital, Valletta, this unusual village with its rustic buildings is a must-see when you’re on the island.

The park’s origins lie in the 80s film by Robert Altman, in which the late Robin Williams played the famous sailor. The film, or rather the musical, was a flop, so Hollywood studios decided to go all out. They built a wooden village out of the ground to serve as the film’s backdrop, with some twenty wooden structures, a road to access the site and, finally, a breakwater on Anchor Bay to protect the set from the high seas.

All this material and innovation wasn’t enough to save the film, but the set has since been given a second life with the park, which has been a great success with Maltese and tourists alike.

Popeye’s Village isn’t Disney Park, mind you, but it’s a great way for kids and parents alike to take a stroll through an almost-authentic village. Children will be delighted to meet up with the main characters from the comic strip, while parents can go behind the scenes with the animation team.

What’s more, Popeye’s village also offers entertainment such as a boat tour, trampolines, a beach with sunbathing terraces, boutiques and numerous seasonal activities.

In practice

Popeye Village is open all year round, from 9.30 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. on average. Prices start at 10.50 euros per adult and 8 euros for children. We advise you to get there by car or cab, as no buses stop directly in front of the village. Please note that there are shuttle buses that organize transfers from certain hotels.
