1. Mondly

Our top/flop:

👍: its very intuitive chatbot

👎 : its repetitive side

Mondly specializes in language learning. It offers its own application for learning Greek: « Learn Greek for free ». Like Duolingo, it lets you learn Greek with games in just a few minutes a day. Its exercises focus on grammar, sentence formation, pronunciation, expressions and key words of modern Greek.

Of course, the application uses voice recognition, as well as statistics. Texts are recorded by native speakers. One of the great things about Mondly is that, unlike Duolingo, you can learn Greek from French!

The application is designed for beginners, intermediate and advanced users. Prices range from €9. 99 for a month to €47. 99 for a year. The application also offers a number of special deals throughout the year. Alternatively, you can opt for the « lifetime subscription » version, at €60, so you never have to spend another cent.

2. Memrise

Our top/flop:

👍: its user community

👎: its lack of diversity

If you want to brush up on your vocabulary or learn new words, phrases or expressions in Greek, Memrise is the ideal application! It uses a scientific method: spaced repetition. Based on our brain’s learning and forgetting curve, it offers you vocabulary cards, with key words and phrases inscribed on them.

You’ll need to learn and remember them. They will then come back at regular intervals: if you remember them, you’ll see them less often. If you don’t, you’ll see it more frequently until you remember it. This Memrise application is tremendously effective when coupled with another application for learning grammar or conjugation.

And one of Memrise’s strengths is its worldwide community of users. Users can create their own lists of cards to memorize, then offer them on the application. So you can download lists from other users to learn Greek on specific themes.

A basic version is free. For advanced use, three subscriptions are available: monthly($8.99), quarterly($18.99) and annual($45.99).

3. Duolingo

Our top/flop:

👍: the app is 100% free

👎: the fun aspect is too present

Duolingo has gradually established itself as one of the best free applications for learning languages. Of course, it’s easy to learn Greek, step by step. Unfortunately, this language is not available in French.

So you’ll have to do it fromEnglish! The prerequisite is to be fluent in Shakespeare’s language before starting to learn Greek.

If this is already the case for you, then Duolingo is the perfect way to learn Greek. This highly entertaining application uses modules in the form of mini-games. It also offers a system of progress and successes, with series to keep up. The aim is to keep you motivated and help you to keep on learning!

Duolingo helps you master the grammar, comprehension and oral and written expression of Greek. You’ll also learn a huge amount of vocabulary!

4. Bravolol

Our top/flop:

👍: the beginner-friendly method

👎: the lack of images

Offering up to 19 languages, Bravolol is an application for learning over 800 expressions and terms in Greek. Acting more like a dictionary, it is aimed at travelers and beginners. If you want to learn Greek before you arrive in Greece, be sure to download the application.

In addition to its rich database, words and expressions are listed by theme and nature. A phonetic tool reinforces the learning process, thanks to voice and visual recognition, perfect tools for perfecting your pronunciation.

The other great thing about this application is that you don’t need to be connected to Wi-Fi to use it! You’ll find it under the name « Learn Greek – Conversation Guide » on Google Play.

5. FunEasyLearn

Our top/flop:

👍: the method

👎: the lack of conjugation and grammar

FunEasyLearn, a company specializing in language learning, also offers an application for learning Greek: « Learn Greek for free ». With this application, you can learn to speak, read and write Greek from French.

It gives you access to over 6,000 words: the most common nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs, classified into 10 levels and 200 subjects. This simple vocabulary is complemented by over 1,200 Greek expressions frequently used by native speakers. These expressions will help you communicate when traveling or in everyday conversations with locals. They are also classified into 7 levels and 120 topics.

This application for learning Greek is ideal as a replacement for Duolingo, or as a complement to Mondly or Memrise.

6. Learn Greek from Simya Solutions

Our top/flop:

👍: ideal for basic Greek

👎: not complete enough

Similar to the FunEasyLearn application, this one is far less comprehensive. Generally free, it’s ideal for learning basic Greek before setting off on a trip. Acting more as a conversation guide, it also uses the spaced repetition technique.

Ideal for learning vocabulary, the words and phrases are presented both phonetically and in Greek script. They are also recorded by a native Greek woman. The app also lets you save your favorite phrases and words for easy retrieval on your travels.

Finally, you can test your knowledge frequently with entertaining quizzes. In the free version, you have access to 11 vocabulary categories, including over 400 Greek words and phrases. In the paid version, you’ll have access to 22 categories with over 1,000 Greek words and phrases.

As with the previous application, we recommend that you use it in conjunction with a more comprehensive one, such as Mondly or Duolingo. You should also test several of them to choose the one that suits you best for learning Greek.

7. Tandem

Our top/flop:

👍: the perfect app for learning while meeting new people

👎: you can lose track of certain conversations

Here’s an application that’s quite different from all the others you’ve come across so far! With Tandem, you enter the languages you already know, then the ones you’d like to discover. Then you indicate your interests, the subjects you like to talk about in everyday life.

Finally, the application will suggest people who want to learn your language, and who master the one you want to learn. The advantage is that you’ll be able to chat with people from all over the world, and share your cultural differences!

Completely free of charge, Tandem is a real opportunity to learn a language while (virtually) meeting new people. You’ll be both student and teacher, in a relaxed, studious atmosphere.
