1. The Besançon Citadel
Visiting Besançon sometimes requires a bit of height. Indeed, it’s impossible not to visit the Citadelle de Besançon, overlooking the city. This site is a masterpiece built over three centuries ago by Vauban. Impressive and majestic, the citadel is a must-see when visiting Besançon.
Considered one of the most beautiful citadels in France, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its ramparts are almost 600 metres long, 5 metres wide and some 20 metres high. 2. Besançon’s old town

The Musée des Beaux-Arts et d’Archéologie is located in the heart of the city and is one of France’s most unusual museums. The museum of time

5. Besançon’s parks and gardens

The Chailluz forest
On the outskirts of town, the Chailluz forest is the perfect place to get away from it all. This playground covers more than 1,780 hectares. Here you can admire wild boar, fallow deer and roe deer. There are also numerous walking trails and picnic areas.
Parc Micaud
Located along the banks of the Doubs River, the Parc Micaud (or Promenade) offers the charms of an English-style park. Stroll along the various paths of this public garden, admiring the tulip trees, paulownias, magnolias and sophoras that punctuate the promenade. Look up for a splendid panoramic view of the Citadel. Parc de la Gare-d’Eau
Gare-d’Eau is in fact a former cargo port.

6. The black door
Visiting Besançon and its Porte Noire can give some people the feeling of strolling along the Champs-Elysées in Paris. Indeed, this 16-meter-high Gallo-Roman monument is in a way the Arc de Triomphe of Besançon.
Built in the 2nd century, this edifice was badly damaged. But thanks to long and painstaking restoration work, it is now one of Besançon’s most beautiful monuments. Known for its rich sculptural decoration and its columns adorned with plant motifs, be sure to take a look!
7. Quai Vauban
Along the left bank of the Doubs, you’ll find Quai Vauban. This pedestrian thoroughfare, laid out at the end of the 17th century, stretches for 600 meters and is decorated with arcaded houses. While Quai Vauban originally had a strategic position, today it has become a classic, homogeneous architectural ensemble.
Stop for a moment to observe these distinctive houses glimmering in the water of the Doubs. You can best admire the harmonious stone ramparts from the Pont Battant opposite.
8. Besançon’s culinary specialities

How do I get to Besançon?
There’s no shortage of ways to visit Besançon!
- By train, two stations are available: Gare Franche-Comté TGV is 15 minutes from Besançon by shuttle, and Gare Viotte is in the city center. If you choose the TGV, you’ll need just 2 hours from Paris and Lyon, and 3h30 from Marseille.
- If you’re coming by car, take the A36 freeway and take the Besançon Ouest, Centre or Nord exits, depending on where you want to go.
