1. Les Terrasses du Port
Les Terrasses du Port is a shopping center in Marseille, close to the Old Port and the Joliette metro station. But as well as a shopping break, the mall offers LE ROOFTOP, a 1,500m² outdoor area where you can enjoy a drink and a 360° view. In winter, you can even enjoy a skating rink.
2. The Dantès Skylounge
The Sofitel Marseille Vieux-Port is one of the city’s most prestigious hotels. But over and above its hotel services, it also boasts one of Marseille’s finest rooftops: the Dantès Skylounge. Starting in May, this 150m² bar lets you enjoy a drink while admiring the view of the Old Port. In the background, you can also catch a glimpse of Notre Dame de la Garde, nicknamed « La Bonne Mère » by the locals.
3. La Friche La Belle de Mai
La Friche is a space for work and innovation, as well as for exhibitions and leisure activities. Every year, it welcomes over 450,000 visitors. One of La Friche’s highlights is its roof terrace. An 8,000m² space where people can enjoy a drink. From May onwards, musical evenings are organized. The roof terrace is also transformed into an open-air cinema during the summer months. The icing on the cake? A unique panorama of the city center and the Mediterranean.
Unlike most of Marseille’s rooftops, the view is unique in that its location changes.
4. La Caravelle
La Caravelle is an emblematic bar-restaurant on the Old Port. As far back as 1920, sailors considered the place the neighborhood’s « must ». In addition to the interior space, the restaurant also boasts an upstairs terrace overlooking the Old Port, with the « Bonne Mère » always in the background.
La Caravelle is organizing a three-part bar event. An aperitif and wine tasting from 6.30pm to 9pm. Then, from 9pm to 11pm, the bar turns to cocktails before taking on a more nocturnal feel.
5. Bar Le Capian
Le Capian is the terrace bar of the InterContinental Marseille Hôtel-Dieu. It’s one of, if not the most beautiful rooftop bar in Marseille. It offers a magnificent view over the heights of Marseille, as well as the Old Port. The bar also specializes in cocktails, with no fewer than 50 on its menu, but the list doesn’t stop there, with over 200 different alcohols from all over the world.
6. Le Corbusier’s Cité Radieuse
La cité radieuse is a famous building in Marseille, named after its architect. Also known as « la maison du fada », it houses apartments and a hotel. At the top, you can access the roof terrace, where locals and tourists alike can enjoy the view of the Saint-Anne district and the heights above. Not to mention a drink. The space also hosts occasional events.
The place stands out from Marseille’s other rooftops because, like La Friche, the view changes. The main reason for this is its geographical location. La Cité Radieuse is located on Boulevard Michelet, just a kilometer from the Stade Vélodrome. It’s the perfect place to enjoy a drink on a rooftop, before going to see the Olympique de Marseille play.
7. MuCEM
The Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations ) is a must-see in Marseille, offering visitors the chance to explore the history of the Mediterranean peoples. The museum was created to coincide with the city’s designation as European Capital of Culture in 2013. While the museum pays homage to the Phocaeans, the first people to set sail for the city, it also offers visitors the chance to enjoy the rooftop. At the top of the museum, there’s an open space where you can stop for a drink and enjoy the view. You’ll see Fort St-Jean, the Old Port, the sea and Notre Dame de la Garde.
8. Rowing Club
The Rowing Club is chef Christian Ernst’s restaurant. Its terrace is undoubtedly one of Marseille’s finest rooftops. Located right next to the Pharo, you can enjoy the terrace on an after-work or sunny afternoon.
The restaurant is currently closed and will reopen in April 2020.
9. Le Petit Pavillon
The latest Marseille rooftop we recommend, Le Petit Pavillon is a restaurant built in 1854. While you can eat here, you can also enjoy the terrace and the view of the Mediterranean from the Corniche. The terrace, a wooden pontoon, gives customers the impression of being on the beach.
