Located in the heart of the Vosges mountains, Gérardmer is a town bordered by a large lake and surrounded by numerous forests. A stay here means a breath of fresh air! The town has long been a favorite with outdoor enthusiasts, thanks to its ski resort.

In fact, Gérardmer is first and foremost known for its winter sports and fantasy films, celebrated at an annual international festival. But if Abel Hugo, Victor’s brother, dubbed it the « Pearl of the Vosges », it was above all for its picturesque natural environment.

1. Around Lake Gérardmer

Here’s the must-do walk around Gérardmer! This little country walk will take you to the town’s characteristic lake. The lake changes with the seasons, sometimes in green, sometimes in red, sometimes in a mysterious veil of mist. You’ll enjoy this little hike in any season!

Accessible to all, but not recommended for baby carriages, the route takes in a variety of scenery. It will convince you that in Gérardmer, town and nature live in perfect harmony.

2. The Mérelle observatory and Lake Gérardmer

This hike will give you a whole new perspective on the lake. First, you’ll circumnavigate the lake, skirting its tranquil waters. But you’ll have to make do with three-quarters of the way around… and then climb to the top!

A short climb along a stream bed will take you to theMérelle observatory. From the top of this watchtower, the view of the lake is breathtaking! Along the way, you’ll discover the Mérelle waterfall and a ferruginous spring, before heading back down the opposite slope.

3. From Lac de Gérardmer to Col de Sapois

This comprehensive hike will give you an excellent overview of the sites of interest around Gérardmer. Starting from the lake, climb to the top of the Mérelle observatory. You’ll be able to enjoy a breathtaking view of the lake from the top! If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can make a detour to the Mérelle waterfall and the ferruginous spring.

The loop then takes you up to the Col de Sapois, a pretty, green summit culminating at 835 metres. Finally, you’ll return via the famous Saut de la Bourrique waterfall. This waterfall takes its name from the legend of a donkey that threw itself on some brigands trying to attack its master, and perished with them in the waterfall.

This short, easy hike to the south-west of Gérardmer is an alternative to the previous itinerary. The short walk takes you first along the river to the Saut de la Bourrique waterfall.

You will then reach the Col de Sapois and its gentle pastures, before descending along the road and meadows. This short walk is very accessible, but beware of the roadside passage if children are accompanying you!

Like many itineraries around Gérardmer, this hike is perfect for families. In fact, it’s a rather short, easy loop that some people enjoy for running. Most of the time, you’ll be in the undergrowth. This makes it a particularly good choice for grey days, or for sheltering from the heat.

Between majestic conifers, ferns and rocks, you’ll enjoy an environment full of charm. The Chemin de l’Urson winds its way along a lively torrent. Last but not least, admire the lovely Saut de la Bourrique waterfall.

6. The Gourrier Fountain path loop and Tête de Grouvelin

Slightly longer than the previous hikes and of moderate difficulty, this loop starts from La Mauselaine. It takes you to the heart of the ski area and the woods, where you’ll enjoy the most bucolic of landscapes. But above all, you’ll be climbing to the highest point in the Vosges, the Tête de Grouvelin, at 1,137 metres above sea level. From here, you’ll enjoy a breathtaking panorama.

Along the way, you may be tempted to take a gourmet break. There are two options. First, the Auberge de Grouvelin, with its mountain chalet feel and traditional dishes. Then there’s La Chaume Francis, a friendly ski resort canteen.

7. La roche des Bioquets and Tête de Grouvelin

Here’s another, slightly easier walk to discover the Tête de Grouvelin and its surroundings. In the heart of the La Croix Claudé ski area, you’ll follow pleasant paths to the Bioquets rock.

From here, you’ll enjoy your first panoramic view over lush green countryside. You’ll then reach the Tête de Grouvelin before returning to your starting point. Both accessible and mountainous, this hike is one of our favorites in the area!
