  • 📍 Location: Padang
  • 🌿 Ecological score: 9/10
  • 💙 We love: charming architecture

Suarga Padang Padang (« Paradise of Padang Padang », in Javanese) is an intimate resort nestled in Padang, a beautiful old colonial town. Powered by its own solar panels, it is built on stilts to preserve the local ecosystem. It’s easy to see why this luxury establishment, built of local wood above a cliff, should be included in our anthology of the best eco-responsible hotels in Bali.

An idyllic spot, an infinity pool overlooking the ocean, the immediate proximity of Padang Padang beach and 36 comfortable accommodations with a typical Indonesian look: the success of your stay is guaranteed thanks to these top-flight services. The most discerning can even choose their own villa with private pool, the ultimate in Balinese luxury.

The restaurant features local specialties, including the famous nasi padang, a spicy delight to be shared without moderation. After this feast, head to the spa for the famous Balinese massages: top-level relaxation with your eyes on the horizon, and even better for two if you come with your partner. To continue this moment that belongs to you alone, how about a stroll along the easily accessible Air Manis beach? This magnificent stretch of sand is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful on the island. Especially when you’re lucky enough to cross it hand in hand…

  • 📍 Location: Seminyak
  • 🌿 Ecological score: 8.5/10
  • 💙 We love: the party that never ends.

The Potato Head Suites clearly deserves its five stars. Ideal for those looking for a lively evening out on their Bali vacation, this resort is directly linked to the famous Potato Head Beach Club. The perfect opportunity to enjoy Balinese nightlife and a memorable vacation!

However, just because this resort is party-oriented doesn’t mean it’s any less eco-responsible. In fact, it’s the first Indonesian hotel to be completely carbon neutral. And that’s not all!

Potato Head Suites has taken great care to minimize its impact on the environment. For example, the textiles used in the complex are made locally, and the food is locally sourced. The detail even goes as far as the bricks with which the complex was built! No fewer than 1.8 million bricks make up its architecture, all made from materials found locally, by local craftsmen.

But it’s not all about partying at this eco-friendly Bali resort. You’ll have access to all kinds of sports and relaxation activities, from ocean-facing Jacuzzis to yoga and workout sessions on the beach to massages at the spa. Perfect after a night of dancing, don’t you think?

  • 📍 Location: Krambitan
  • 🌿 Ecological score: 8.5/10
  • 💙 We love: the private pool and private beach

Krambitan? It’s a pretty little village in the south of the island, between the Indian Ocean and rice paddies, where Soori Bali has seen fit to install its spacious villas. And rightly so: with their private swimming pools, these modernly-designed residences blend in perfectly with their surroundings.

This sustainable resort, for example, was designed using local volcanic rock. Accommodations require minimal air conditioning and lighting, while water is recycled. The Gold level awarded by the EarthCheck label attests to the ecological efficiency of this elegant resort.

Most consumer goods and foodstuffs are purchased from local merchants. You’ll have the pleasure of sampling the latter in the estate’s two restaurants. For example, we love the typical Asian breakfast served every morning. A real treat!

The exceptional location of this eco-responsible hotel in Bali remains one of its strong points. You can contemplate the Hindu temple of Tanah Lot, which has overlooked a volcanic peak for almost 500 years. A number of first-rate excursions are also available from reception. On the menu: hiking, boat trips, strolling through the streets of Denpasar and its fascinating Bali Museum… Our favorite, if we had to choose one? Sunrise from Sanur beach, a breathtaking spectacle on a spot of breathtaking beauty. Mystical ecstasy guaranteed!

Treehouses in the heart of the Indonesian jungle

  • 📍 Location: Ubud
  • 🌿 Ecological score: 8.5/10
  • 💙 We love: being immersed in the heart of nature

Ah, theAlila Ubud… It’s nice that you’re the one we’re talking about, but we almost wish we’d kept this address all to ourselves. Just think: the exotic elegance of these tree-top rooms in the tropical jungle around Ubud.

The managers have called on the region’s many craftsmen to create this authentic and sincere atmosphere. Typical decor, absolute comfort, you’ll feel right at home in these exceptional accommodations. Well, at home, you may not have a view of the Balinese jungle and its visiting monkeys. One good point: this eco-responsible hotel in Bali bans the use of single-use plastic and has all spa products manufactured locally: chic and ecological, in short.

The establishment has a spa where you can pamper yourself with local oils and other products. But what clearly sets it apart from the competition is its location. Close to Ubud, known for its handicrafts, Hindu shrines and lively traditional dance performances, the hotel enjoys an idyllic location.

There’s no shortage of attractions in the area, especially for hiking enthusiasts. The Campuhan ridge trail, a sumptuous panoramic and vegetation trail, awaits them. Any other ideas? All right: wander through the temples of the monkey forest for a totally immersive experience. Mischievous and playful, they are absolutely fascinating.

A tropical haven of peace in the heart of Bali’s highlands

  • 📍 Location: Ubud
  • 🌿 Ecological score: 8.5/10
  • 💙 We like: hyper-sustainable design and management of the complex

Who said eco-friendly construction was synonymous with rustic living? Not us, especially since we’re staying at Mana Earthly Paradise. Also in Ubud, this village of six eco-designed mud huts is set amidst rice paddies.

Here, earth, stone, water and bamboo wood are skilfully used to create absolutely charming spaces. All electricity comes from the sun, while at the Mana kitchen, the estate’s restaurant, only organic produce has a voice. They come from the work of local communities, who also supply the resort’s grocery store. At the Mana market, farm-grown vegetables and local handicrafts are on offer to holidaymakers, who can also help pick herbs. Eco-responsible, did you say?

As the hotel is located three kilometers from the center of Ubud, you can take advantage of your visit to discover the fabulous Hindu temple of Gunung Lebah, enthroned on Campuhan hill since the 8th century. It’s one of the most beautiful in the region.

The hotel provides bicycles for getting around the area. In our opinion, this is the best way to reach the Ubud art market or the Goa Gajah cave. This archeological site in the village of Bedulu is a vivid testimony to the religious syncretism that has, over the centuries, enabled the blending of Hinduism and Buddhism. It’s a marvel to behold!

  • 🌿 Ecological score: 8/10
  • 💙 We love: very luxurious private villas

So, you’ve got the keys to your accommodation at Purist Villas? Yes, we know, it’s the ultimate in Indonesian luxury. Surrounded by bamboo, built with natural local stone and featuring a private swimming pool, they blend in perfectly with their surroundings. The spacious interiors feature modern comforts and the finest decor.

This eco-responsible hotel in Bali opts for a chic, relaxed atmosphere, which is fully expressed during yoga classes or massage sessions at the spa. Don’t let your hair down too much, though: rafting and climbing are a must here. It has to be said that nature is the main concern of the establishment, which promotes energy saving and the banning of plastic. It even offsets part of its carbon footprint and sells surplus food to the needy. Hats off to them.

And the efforts don’t stop there: Indonesian culture is showcased in playful folk dance lessons. From culinary workshops to self-service bicycles, everything here is designed to encourage immersion. How about a refreshing dip in the Tegenungan waterfall, famous throughout the region?

If you prefer a cultural break, Ubud’s museums are a must. The Neka Museum, the Puri Lukisan Museum and theAgung Rai display fascinating collections of traditional and contemporary art. An island of art and history, beautiful Bali never ceases to surprise.
