If you live in south-west France, you’ve probably already heard of the Pont Napoléon. It’s located in the commune of Luz Saint-Sauveur (Hautes Pyrénées), 30 minutes from Tarbes and Lourdes. The bridge has a history of over 150 years. Before taking the plunge, it’s worth finding out a little more about the place.

Napoleon III commissioned the bridge in 1859. Construction lasted until 1863. Legend has it that the Emperor chose the site himself. At the time, the Emperor and his wife, Empress Eugénie, were particularly fond of this spot. They had stayed here for thermal cures. To thank the village for having welcomed the couple and cared for his wife, Napoleon III decided to launch this beautiful project. Look carefully: you can see the letter N inscribed at the top of the arch.

If you’d like to try your hand at one of the best bungee jumping spots in the Pyrenees, and indeed in France, we recommend the Pont Napoléon. In fact, it’s a UNESCO World Heritage site. To get there, you have to climb to an altitude of 755 metres, in the small village of Luz-Saint-Sauveur. Once on the bridge, a 90-metre drop awaits you. It’s said to be the ideal height for beginners, and impressive enough for those who’ve done it before. The scenery is breathtaking: mountains, forests and river, you couldn’t dream of anything better. To book, you can opt for one of these thrill-seekers:

Luz Aventure
  • Open from April to December
  • Allow half a day
  • Jump every 30 minutes
  • Price for a standard jump €70 per person
  • Several options are available
Elastic Crocodil Bungee
  • Open from May to October
  • Less availability
  • Average activity time 40 minutes
  • Price for a standard jump €70 per person
  • Several options are available

Take advantage of your stay in the region to admire the sumptuous scenery offered by Luz Saint-Sauveur. The region is teeming with sports and leisure activities, some of which are quite unusual. Hiking, water sports, snowshoeing, cave visits, wildlife parks and spa treatments – there’s no way to get bored in the Hautes-Pyrénées.

The Mas d’Azil cave (Ariège)

Extreme sports enthusiasts and nature lovers, the Mas d’Azil cave could be just what you’re looking for! Located in the Ariège region, 83 km south of Toulouse and 32 km from Foix, it’s one of the most spectacular places in the Pyrenees for bungee jumping.

The Mas d’Azil cave was created by nature over four million years ago. Over time, the Arize river dug it out. The long 420-meter tunnel was used to build the D119 departmental road. This is the only road in Europe that crosses a 100% natural cave.

Bungee jumping from the Mas d’Azil cave is a great privilege, an experience like no other in the world. The jump is 70 meters high. A reasonable height for beginners. But it’s also a great experience for regular jumpers: the scenery is so atypical… With Elastic Jump, the organizer of this activity, you’re in safe hands. Once we’ve given you all the information you need and checked that all safety precautions have been taken, it’s time to get started. Are you ready? Then go for it!

If you’re interested in bungee jumping from the Mas d’Azil cave, here’s what you need to know:

  • Organized by Elastic Jump
  • Open weekends from late May to late September
  • Price for a standard jump €80 per person
  • Several options are available

And don’t forget to visit the nearby Mas d’Azil cave and prehistory museum.

Another spot for bungee jumping in the Pyrenees, but which is unfortunately closed at the moment: the Pont du Diable (40 meters), at Céret, in the Pyrénées Orientales. We have no information on when it will reopen.

The Saldes bridge isn’t very high compared with other bridges, but you’ll still be jumping from a height of 30 metres. More than enough to make you dizzy! Rest assured, the staff will take the time to explain everything in detail, including important safety precautions.
