What you need to know about Amsterdam Coffeeshops

In recent years, the Dutch public authorities have been seeking to limit the number of coffeeshops, thereby reducing the opportunities for locals and tourists alike to smoke freely in Amsterdam.

As such, the conditions of sale and customer service are regulated for coffeeshops:

  • No dual cannabis/alcohol license: you can only sell one or the other,
  • Ban on the sale of hard drugs (cocaine, heroin, LSD, etc.),
  • All advertising is prohibited,
  • Prohibition on sales to minors,
  • Individuals must not possess more than 5 grams (sale authorized for personal consumption only).

If you’d like to give it a try, ask the budtenders (the people authorized to sell cannabis) for advice. They’ll be delighted to share their knowledge and expertise with you!

Is smoking legal in Amsterdam?

Cannabis is not legal in the Netherlands, it is only tolerated, and only in certain places. Cannabis use is strictly forbidden in nightclubs, bars and festivals. It’s also strictly forbidden to smoke cannabis near schools!

To avoid any problems, avoid smoking cannabis in the street. Firstly, because the locals don’t appreciate it, but also because there are more discreet places to do it. You can, for example, smoke inside a coffeeshop or in a private place like your hotel room, if the house rules allow it.

Note that if you possess more than 5 grams, the police may consider you to be dealing in it, and impose a fine of up to €3,500. If you possess more than 30 grams of cannabis, you risk two years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to €16,750.

What are the rules if you smoke in Amsterdam?

The doses offered in coffeeshops can be much more concentrated than in France, so it’s important to check with the staff. If you do decide to use drugs, moderate your doses, and above all, never buy drugs on the street.

Don’t hesitate to call 112 if one of your friends is feeling unwell. And remember, never drive after using cannabis!

Finally, if you have a few grams of cannabis left at the end of your stay, don’t try to take it back to France. Border controls are plentiful, and you could be in big trouble!
