  • It’s packed with antioxidants, notably polyphenols, making it effective in combating the oxidative stress responsible for premature cell aging. According to a Chinese study, it may even make us live longer!
  • It’s a powerful laxative, perfect for constipation!
  • Drinking 2-3 cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of cardiovascular accidents, as highlighted by a study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology.
  • Thanks to its high antioxidant content, coffee also has anti-cancer properties, notably against cancer of the liver, pancreas, breast, prostate and skin.

What are the risks of too much caffeine?

While drinking coffee can be beneficial to your health on a daily basis, health authorities are urging consumers not to overindulge!

Overconsumption can present health risks, particularly for certain sensitive groups such as :

  • Pregnant women are advised not to drink more than 200 mg of caffeine a day, equivalent to 2 cups. According to some experts, an overdose of coffee can compromise fetal development.
  • People suffering from stomach and digestive problems, as the drink is particularly acidic.
  • People with heart problems and high blood pressure, as coffee is an energy drink that affects the nervous system. According to Australian researchers, drinking more than 5 cups of coffee a day increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease by 22%.
  • People suffering from sleep disorders, as coffee promotes insomnia
  • People who are deficient in magnesium, calcium and potassium, who are further deprived by coffee.
  • Athletes , because of the increased risk of muscle pain. It is not advisable to drink coffee less than two hours before an intense sports session.

How many cups of coffee can you drink a day?

According to the recommendations of the European Food Safety Agency (EFSA), the daily limit for a healthy adult is 400 mg of caffeine, equivalent to 4 cups a day.
