Soda consumption increases the risk of developing liver cancer, especially in women over 50. Find out more!

Every year, 50 liters of sugary drinks are consumed by the French, and this taste for soft drinks is particularly dangerous for women’s health.

Indeed, according to a recent study published in the journal JAMA Network Open in August 2023 and conducted by Harvard researchers among 98,786 postmenopausal women aged 50 to 79, just one can of this type of beverage is enough to increase the risk of developing liver cancer and other chronic liver diseases by 85%.

A can of soda a day puts post-menopausal women at greater risk of liver cancer

The study participants, all enrolled in the Women’s Health Initiative from 1993 to 1998 at 40 clinical centers in the USA, were followed until March 2020.

In 20 years, 207 of them developed liver cancer and 148 died of chronic liver disease.

Based on their observations, the researchers estimate that post-menopausal women who consume at least one sweetened soft drink (or fruit drink) a day are 1.75 times more affected by liver cancer and 2.5 times more likely to die from chronic liver disease than those who drink three times less.

« It’s worth thinking twice before choosing sugary drinks every day »

« Although this study is observational and therefore cannot give cause and effect, we know from a body of evidence that it’s worth thinking twice before choosing sugary drinks every day. High-sugar drinks are often high in calories and increase the risk of obesity, which in turn is a factor in cancer and liver disease, » says Pauline Emmett, PhD, lead researcher at the University of Bristol.
