The French are great chocolate lovers! In fact, we rank tenth in the world, consuming 6.4 kg per capita per year!

With such consumption, it’s safe to say that the French are real chocolate fans. In fact, chocolate is France’s favorite food, with 98% of the population eating it!

A large-scale study

The 60 Millions de Consommateurs trial focused on 35 classic chocolate bars, sold in supermarkets at prices ranging from €6 to €30 a kilo: dark or milk, with or without hazelnuts!

In terms of nutrition, the Institut National de la Consommation points out that the results of the test come as no real surprise. « Located between D for plain dark chocolate and E for all other bars, their Nutri-Score is poor ».

Dark chocolate in the lead

In fact, dark chocolate versions are better than milk chocolate ones. This is due in particular to their low sugar content. « 5.6 g on average for a 20 g portion, compared with 10.8 g for milk bars ».

Good to know: the World Health Organization recommends no more than 50g of sugars a day!

It’s also worth noting that dark chocolate provides 5 times more fiber than milk versions. Nevertheless, dark chocolate is richer in cocoa butter, and therefore fatter than milk chocolate.

Beyond composition, the Institut National de la Consommation points out that brands are increasingly seeking to differentiate themselves through labels, but in the absence of criteria and independent certification, company labels do not offer sufficient guarantees.

Good to know: Rely on fair trade labels such as « Fair for life » or « Paysans Producteurs » when making your choice.
