Other information about driving in Franche-Comté
The road network in the four départements of Franche-Comté comprises 28,437 km of roads, most of which are departmental and communal roads.
Generally speaking, the region’s road network is of good quality. Even the Haut-Jura massif is well served by departmental roads, although the route is winding on the higher ground. Be careful on mountain bends, especially if the roads are icy.
The relief is mountainous in the east of the region, in the Jura massif and in the foothills of the Vosges in the north. The relief eases towards the west, leading to the Doubs and Saône valleys.
In the mountains, it’s advisable to be equipped with chains or snow tires if you’re visiting Franche-Comté by motorhome in winter. Snowfall can be heavy in the higher regions. And thaw-free days are common at altitude!
RV parks in Franche-Comté: where to park?
In Franche-Comté, there are fewer service areas than in neighboring regions. And the higher you drive, the fewer you’ll find! Generally speaking, service areas are located in urban areas, often on the outskirts of town centers.
But you’ll only find one per town. This is the case for Besançon, Dole, Vesoul, Belfort, Montbéliard… Don’t worry: there’s always at least one available near a tourist site (Baume-les-Dames, Saint-Claude, Les Rousses, Mouthe or the Ballon d’Alsace).
Access to the areas is generally free, except near the most popular tourist sites. They are, however, well rated. Paid sites offer a full range of comfortable services (water, electricity, parking, wastewater disposal, sanitary facilities, etc.).

When is the best time to travel by motorhome in Franche-Comté?
Franche-Comté enjoys a humid, semi-continental climate, characterized by cold winters and hot summers. However, the region is subject to a variety of climatic influences due to its variable topography. The upper Jura chain has a humid mountain climate, with abundant snow cover in winter. Summers are cool and stormy.
But as you lose altitude, the climate warms up. And while Aurillac is reputed to be the coldest town in France, it’s actually the Jura and Doubs regions that are among the coldest in the country! Thermal amplitude is high between seasons, with severe winter frosts and record summer highs.
The weather between January and March, and between October and December, is therefore unfavorable for touring. Temperatures rise again in spring, but the climate remains cool and very humid. In Besançon, for example, the average maximum temperature ranges from 15°C in April to 22°C in June. It reaches 24°C in July-August, but exceeds 30°C every year during heatwaves.
The best time to visit Franche-Comté by motorhome is between July and September. In July and August, temperatures average 23°C in Belfort, 24°C in Besançon and 26°C in Dole. Early autumn sees a rapid return to cool. According to some climate observers, autumn in Besançon is comparable to winter in Montpellier…
