We often hear that the key to good health lies in our food choices. Well, it’s true! In fact, certain types of food are more than dangerous for your health !
Have you ever asked about ultra-processed or simply processed foods? These food products are linked to potential dangers such as overweight, obesity, diabetes and even the development of cancer. Nothing to write home about…
In fact, the French Parliamentary Office for the Evaluation of Scientific and Technological Choices (Office parlementaire d’évaluation des choix scientifiques et technologiques) even recommends the introduction of specific taxation to discourage consumption of these products. We take stock of these foods that are ruining our health!
Recently, a new French study has confirmed the harmful health effects of ultra-processed foods, which even increase mortality among middle-aged adults in France.
There is a link between ultra-processed foods and the risk of death!
A recent French study, published on February 11, 2019, in the American journal Jama Internal Medicine, establishes a link between the consumption ofultra-processed foods and mortality.
According to the researchers, who warn that this is not a cause-effect relationship but a « modest » one, » a 10% increase in the proportion of ultra-processed food consumption was significantly associated with a 14% risk of all-cause mortality » .
To reach this conclusion, the scientists studied data from 44,551 French people aged over 45 who took part in a major study between 2009 and 2017.
For 8 years, participants were asked to indicate their precise diet over 24 hours every 6 months, with a 14.4% share of ultra-processed foods.
The result? After 7 years, 602 people had died, 219 of them from cancer.
Additives are once again to blame!
What are these ultra-processed foods?
The researchers specify that these products are characterized by ready-to-eat or ready-to-heat formulations, consisting mainly of ingredients generally combined with additives.
This mainly means ready-made meals, cereals and industrial cakes. These products contain more additives, added salt and sugar, and are low in vitamins and fiber!
Interesting information from this new study: people with low incomes or education levels, who live alone, engage in little physical activity and have a higher-than-average body mass index, are the biggest consumers of ultra-processed foods.
This represents a breakthrough in research into the links between ultra-processed foods and health, but the researchers point out that » further prospective studies are needed to confirm these results « .
