History of the Vienna Kursalon

Built in the mid-19th century, the Kursalon is an emblematic Italian Renaissance building in the middle of the Stadtpark. The park and palace were built following the demolition of Vienna’s fortifications ordered by Franz Joseph I, the penultimate Austro-Hungarian emperor, in 1957. The Kursalon was originally intended as a spa and wellness area in the heart of the capital. It soon became a concert and reception hall, with its first concert in 1868 conducted by the famous Austrian composer Johann Strauss.

Since then, it has played host to numerous classical music concerts, featuring renowned Austrian composers. Today, more than 500 concerts are performed by the Alt Wien Orchestra every year in Vienna’s Kursalon, to the delight of its 200,000 annual visitors!

Strauss & Mozart Concerts  » is Kursalon Vienna’s recurring flagship concert. It is based mainly on the works of the two famous composers and is performed by the « Salonorchestra Alt Wien », conducted by Professor Udo Zwoelfer! This orchestra is renowned as one of the finest interpreters of Viennese classical music, sublimating Johann Strauss’s famous « King of Waltz » to the compositions of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart!

When you attend a concert at Vienna’s Kursalon, you can enjoy a unique Strauss & Mozart concert. Before the performance, you can enjoy a three- or four-course meal at Restaurant Johann, to further immerse yourself in this refined Viennese world. How to get to the Vienna Kursalon

Kursalon Vienna is located in the Stadtpark, in the heart of Vienna, along Johannesgasse, at the following address: Johannesgasse 33, 1010 Wien. If you’re planning to attend a concert at the Kursalon Vienna, you can get to this superb function hall using Vienna’s public transport system:

  • By U-Bahn: You can reach the Kursalon Vienna by taking the green U-Bahn line « U4 » and stopping at « Stadtpark ». From the subway station, it’s less than a 5-minute walk to the concert hall.
  • By streetcar: You can also reach the Vienna Kursalon by taking streetcar line no. 2 and stopping at Weihburggasse, which is closest to the Vienna Kursalon and Stadtpark. From there, it’s less than 5 minutes’ walk to the palace.
  • By bus: You can reach the Vienna Kursalon by stopping at the « Schwarzenbergplatz » stop on line 2A. From there, it’s a 5-minute walk to the palace for your concert.

Good to know: Viennese public transport generally runs until midnight on weekdays (with night buses in between), and subways operate 24 hours a day on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. To calculate your route, visit the Wiener Lienen website or use the Google Maps application.

You can also reach the Vienna Kursalon by car, either with your own vehicle or a rental car. The nearest covered pay parking lot is Garage Palais Corso, located at the following address: Mahlerstraße 12, 1010 Wien, Austria. Charge €1.90 for the first hour and €3.90 for each additional hour. Please note that the area in which the Vienna Kursalon is located is mainly pedestrian, so it’s difficult to find a parking space on the street.

If you want to attend a concert at Vienna’s Kursalon, it’s best to reserve your seat in advance to avoid disappointment. The Strauss & Mozart Concerts generally take place at 8.15 p.m. each day. Depending on the time of year and various one-off events, this recurring concert may be replaced by another.
