After a triumphant arrival at Hanoi airport and a visit to the country’s capital, head for Lao Cai. You’ll reach this northern town by a comfortable, air-conditioned night train. Then it’s off to the picturesque Bac Ha market. The village and its traditional houses are well worth a visit. Then on to Sa Pa, a village close to the Chinese border, with its immense rice terraces.

You’ll catch a glimpse of Mount Phan Si Pan, which dominates the Indochinese peninsula from a height of 3,143 metres. You then hike through the villages of Ma Tra, Lao Chai, Ta Van, Ban Khoang and Ta Giang Phinh. A bus ride back to Hanoi precedes the transfer to Ninh Binh, the Dinh temples and the ancient capital of Hoa Lu.
