The galette des rois season is officially underway ! Throughout January, you’ll be able to enjoy the famous galette des rois.
A delicious tradition, the galette seduces with its crispy puff pastry and melt-in-the-mouth frangipane flavor! A symbol of conviviality, it brings young and old together around the table.
The pleasure of sharing it with family, friends or colleagues, and the hope of finding the fava bean, make it an unmissable treat!
But after the festive season and copious meals, you don’t want to weaken your arteries even more! And yes, the galette des rois is good, but it’s greasy!
So, for a little more levity in January, follow PasseportSanté’s advice!
Who knows, maybe you’ll become king or queen of the light galette for a day?
When is Epiphany in 2024?
Have you ever wondered why you eat the galette des rois every year?
Epiphany, a Christian celebration marking the arrival of the Magi in Bethlehem, traditionally takes place on January 6, 12 days after the birth of Christ.
However, due to a reform dating back to 1802, if January 1st falls on a weekday, the date is moved to the first Sunday following.
This year, as January 1 falls on a Monday, Epiphany will be on the following Sunday, January 7, 2024!
Nevertheless, it’s not just believers who get together to share a good slice of frangipane cake (or apple cake, if you prefer)!
Goodbye butter
For a lighter galette, forget the butter! In the original galette recipe, there’s butter. A lot of butter…
It’s a great source of fat! But it’s not essential! And yes, to replace butter in your recipe, you canadd 0% fromage frais instead!
You can also opt for low-fat heavy cream or 0% faisselle , a way of reducing the fat content of your galette without depriving yourself!
Little bonus: You can also use fruit compote to replace butter! Low in fat, compote makes a perfect binder for your dough!
Eggs no, egg whites yes!
Opt for stiffly beaten egg whites rather than whole eggs in your galette preparation.
Beat the egg whites and fold the emulsion into the batter. Whipped egg whites are renowned for lightening desserts, adding volume without adding too much substance, and preventing the galette from drying out after baking!
Replace the sugar
It’s a well-known fact that white sugar isn’t ideal for your health. For a healthier galette that’s less full of artificial ingredients, eliminate sugar from your preparation!
Instead, use natural flavors such as agave syrup or seasonal fruits to sweeten and flavor your recipe.
This year, opt for a low-fat galette that’s better for your health!
