1. Nantes

You can’t visit the Loire-Atlantique region without stopping off in Nantes. Once the thousand-year-old capital of the Duchy of Brittany, Nantes is now a modern, dynamic city, both culturally and economically. If you start your Loire-Atlantique trip with a visit to Nantes, don’t miss out on a visit to the Château des Ducs de Bretagne, and in particular its ramparts, which are its main attraction. Continue your discovery of Nantes with a stroll through the Jardin des Plantes.

Visit the Saint-Pierre-et-Saint-Paul cathedral, before enjoying a drink in the old Bouffay district, followed by lunch on Place Royale. Pass through the Passage Pommeraye, then head to the former shipyard site, which has been completely rehabilitated into a quirky, cultural urban living space. Here, you can meet the famous elephant of the Machines de l’Ile, play basketball, zip-line and rollerblade, ride a sea monster on the carousel, or simply sit on a terrace and remake the world, before nibbling a bite in one of the themed restaurants.

2. Trentemoult

Located in the commune of Rezé, the village of Trentemoult promises a real change of scenery, just a few minutes by waterbus from downtown Nantes. This former fishing village has now become a friendly residential neighborhood, where each house rivals the others in inventiveness to show off its exterior, and where a real community has been created. Colorful walls, pretty gardens and trompe-l’œil will surprise you at every turn. A world apart and utterly relaxing, not to be missed!

You can visit Loire-Atlantique from the water. It’s almost omnipresent: the Atlantic Ocean, the Loire, the Erdre and the Sèvre nantaise. Change your point of view and combine a sporting outing with a discovery of the surrounding area. This activity is available in several places, but doing it from Ancenis is a great way to discover the east of the département, which is less visited than the west.

What to do in Loire-Atlantique? Eat and drink! Discovering a French department without tasting its specialities is a cruel lack of savoir vivre! Who hasn’t heard of Petits Beurre LU, galettes Saint-Michel or berlingots? Les rigolettes may be less famous, but they’re just as tasty – provided you like sugar and fruit purée!

If Muscadet is no longer needed to accompany your Nantais duck, you should be surprised by a Nantais curé crisp. Today, this raw-milk cheese is produced in Pornic. Last but not least, Nantais cake is a subtle blend of French pastry traditions and West Indian influences. The presence of the unusual ingredient rum is explained by Nantes’ role in the triangular trade of the 18th century.

Boating is a great way to see the Loire-Atlantique region from a different angle and at a different pace. You don’t need to have a boating license; you can hire electric boats that are easy to handle. Freedom is yours!

Take time to enjoy the scenery, then moor up on one of the pontoons for a picnic on the banks of the Loire.

9. Guérande and its salt marshes

Guérande is without doubt one of the most beautiful historic towns in Loire-Atlantique. Immerse yourself in the picturesque world of this medieval town as you stroll along the « chemin de ronde », the last vestige of the historic walls of the Duchy of Brittany. From this vantage point, you can overlook the old town, before strolling through the streets of Guérande and admiring the elegant townhouses and sculpted pediments.

A visit to Guérande is also an opportunity to learn more about the salt marshes from which over 10,000 tons of salt are extracted every year! Visit the Musée des Marais Salants and get lost in the meandering salt marshes.

Western Loire-Atlantique is a marshy region. As you leave the salt marshes of the Guérande peninsula, you’ll soon approach the Brière Regional Nature Park. The best way to discover the beauty of this natural site is by boat. You might even catch a glimpse of some wild birds!

What to do in Loire-Atlantique in summer? Swimming! This département is partly influenced by the sea. From lively seaside resorts to small, quiet beaches, there’s something for everyone. Tread the sands of the immense beach at La Baule-Pornichet and its seafront, or the wild beach at Saint-Brévin l’Océan.

Opt for more typical, intimate spots, such as the family beach at La Bernerie-en-Retz, Gohaud beach and its fisheries, or the small rocky coves of Pornic or Le Pouliguen. For sunsets, nothing beats the 360° beach at La Turballe.

This 12th-century fortress on the banks of the Sèvre nantaise once served as a pillar in the defense of the Breton duchy against attacks from the Poitevin and Angevin duchies. The castle is not the only asset of this charming village in the Nantes vineyards. It’s also pleasant to lose yourself in its narrow streets.

How do I get to Loire-Atlantique?

The easiest way to get to Loire-Atlantique is probably to take the train from Paris. The journey takes between 2 hrs 10 min and 2 hrs 30 min. You’ll easily find a car rental agency near the station’s south exit.

If you prefer to drive, allow around 3 hrs 30 min to get from downtown Paris to Nantes. Once there. It will take you about an hour to get to La Baule and 1h15 to get to Châteaubriant. Don’t hesitate to carpool.

Where to stay in Loire-Atlantique?

The best place to visit Loire-Atlantique is Nantes. From here, you can easily criss-cross a large part of the department. It may be a good idea to spend a night in Trentemoult, on theIle-de-Nantes, in the Procé district or in the Jardin des Plantes district.
