In just a few days, the summer season will officially get underway! But we’re already feeling the summer heat coming on… Barbecues, ice creams and aperitifs are taking over!
Food plays a vital role in hot weather, helping to maintain hydration and promote well-being. So how do you eat well in hot weather? We’ve got the answers!
Hydration is key
Stay hydrated by drinking regularly throughout the day. In hot weather, it’s a good idea to drink even when you don’t feel thirsty!
ANSES recommends drinking at least 1.5 to 2 liters of water a day. Limit consumption of foods rich in salt, fat and sugar, which can increase the sensation of thirst.
Choose fresh foods, such as water-rich fruits and vegetables like watermelon, strawberries, cucumbers, tomatoes and pineapple, to help keep you hydrated! In fact, these foods are over 90% water!
However, avoid alcoholic beverages as much as possible, as they can dehydrate the body.
Lightweight is recommended
Opt for foods rich in minerals, such as potassium (bananas, avocados) and magnesium (nuts, green vegetables), to compensate for losses due to perspiration !
We also recommend replacing red meats with white meats such as chicken or poultry cutlets!
Avoid heavy meals and opt for light, easily digestible ones to avoid heat-related discomfort. However, limit your intake of fruit, as it is rich in sugar.
You can, for example, eat an ice cream that isn’t all that sweet after all! Sorbets are still the least calorific… However, avoid eating the cone, which is a source of calories!
