Autumn’s beautiful transformations in photos
Even if we never stop looking around us, we can sometimes miss the natural transition from summer to autumn. And if you’re fascinated by the changing colors of trees, here’s a list of photos comparing different places before and after they’ve donned their autumn-colored robes.
Aside from the chilly air, scarves and delicious autumn fruits and vegetables, the evolution of leaves on branches is probably the biggest sign that we’re approaching autumn. A leaf is green because of the presence of a group of pigments called chlorophyll. When chlorophyll is abundant in the cells, the green of the chlorophyll molecules dominates and masks the color of any other pigments that may be present in the leaf. These pigments gradually decompose in autumn, revealing the many other colors that also exist in leaves. This is when we get the rich browns, oranges, yellows and reds we associate with the season.
